Provincial Prevention Priority

Preventing family and sexual violence protects people.

Prevention is the best path forward. Reliable investment is a must.

Community-based programming creates stronger families that are free from violence.

Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) programming focuses on contributing to protective factors for families to help prevent child abuse or neglect. FCSS programming builds supportive relationships within the family, at school and in the community.

Research Shows

Estimates show that in Alberta as much as $20 can be saved for every dollar invested in preventing family violence.

Creating Resiliency

Well-adjusted parents make better role models, and foster a supportive foundation in the home for children and partners.

FCSS programming is designed to provide parents and spouses with a range of support. This includes everything from education and awareness programming, to skills-based learning, fun, and connection to critical supports.

Good parenting has a multiplying effect. Parenting styles can continue down generational lines. Providing support and services for one generation can improve outcomes for generations to come, effectively improving futures for a wider range of young people.

The more people we reach with FCSS programming that facilitates community engagement and meets the unique needs of that neighbourhood, the more Alberta families experience positive outcomes.

Volunteering at community events is a chance for families to improve relationships within the family, meet their neighbours, and feel connected to their community. Engaging with the community through volunteerism allows people within a family to create a strong network of support all their own.

Helping youth navigate romantic relationships helps them in the future.

Young people thrive on stability. Regular programming and activities focused on creating healthy relationships and identifying the warning signs of an unhealthy relationship can help prevent hardship and relationship-based violence. When youth programming is delivered by trained staff and utilizes active, skills-based learning that is culturally relevant, it helps create healthy lifestyles at home and with peers.

Prevention Strategies

Aligning with provincial strategies for success.

Along with the provincial priorities, FCSS programs follow the Government of Alberta’s prevention strategies – creating impacts across a wide spectrum of social challenges with interventions to help prevent housing insecurity and homelessness.

Strategies at a higher level

Learn how we bring these strategies to life through programming across Alberta.

The FCSS programming offered across Alberta helps bring these strategies to life for the people in our province. But what can they look like at a higher level?

  • Helping communities identify their social needs and how to meet those needs
  • Prioritizing volunteer work in the community
  • Developing resiliency skills in individuals and families
  • Aiding the social development of children and their families
  • Supporting seniors’ health and connection to their communities
  • Promoting and providing access to social supports in the community
